Monaco Grand Prix

I have always carried a great fascination for motor sport and cars in particular. Formula One has been one of my most favorite sports to watch. Yet I have never been able to come up with the resources and fundings necessary to travel away for a grand prix in Formula One, because I am a student and all that as you may know.

One of my biggest dreams is to sit with a view like this and watch a round of Formula One. I can already hear the engines running past you reving almost 19 thousand rpm with speeds well over 200 kph. Sitting there you can also smell the sea while you are sipping to a beer in the clear sky and sun tanning in your face. Awesome!

How about those yachts laying around in the bay? This was a mere digression, I will now have to continue my readings on Discrete and Combinatorial Mathematics.

I just finished my sixth paper in the subject of Basic Computer Science today which was an easy task. I was only going to create a very basic homepage writing html-tags and such by the help of a programe called Textpad. You can check out the result for yourself and see what you think. We made some jsp-tags as well just to see how it worked on the page. JSP is short for Java Server Pages. It means that your page contains some programming but your Server has to support it in order to show the content on the web.

Open Source: Sun Microsystems

The seminar held by representatives from Sun Microsystem a week ago or so, was both really entertaing and educational. They were really good. Good at holding a lecture in front of many students and had a lot of knowledge of what they were talking about and working with. The one to set off the seminar was Matt Thompson, a Senior Director for the Developer Outreach & Open Source Programs Office. He was accompanied by two others, a woman and a guy. I remember only the guy`s name, Simon Rittinger and that is because I noticed that under the name he had written "Technology Evangelist". I found that very amusing but he was in many ways that. He preached about things to come and how good his own company`s programming tools are. Anyway, their job was mainly to build and toy with new things, program them and see if they could build the thigns that they fantasised about. What a job. Their boss, Matt Thompson, meant they had the dream job!

Simon Rittinger and his partner presented to us a glove which could be used as a mouse in a particuar interface they had developed. She put on the glove and with arm movements in an interface pretty similar to that in the movie Minority Report, she opened windows and manipulated them around. She used an interface developed by themselfes, which was a desktop in 3D called Project Looking Glass. You moved to the left and right and up and down. It was really impressive.

Besides that, they presented their own Operative System, called Solaris. That looked like a good OS although I am at the moment, I`m sorry to say, too dependent on Microsoft with regards to especially games. And also they presented to us programming tools like Netbeans in particular and adviced us to start using those. Do any of you have any experience in programming with that? Let me know!

They gave us a good presentation and the pizza along with a bottle of coke afterwords was great. They handed also out "Sun"-sweaters and cd`s with Solaris and Netbeans. The sweater was a killer. See you! Next week Microsoft is throwing a seminar in Trondheim. I think I will show up there as well.

The dust has now settled and we are now well into our year at Gloshaugen. I have enrolled into different classes, one more interesting than the other. A course in Japanes economy and politics is one that I have high hopes for. And I registered myself to a class where we learn japanese language as well and that is the most interesting lecture I have now. It is very cool the moment you feel you master those funny and to us, weird asian symbols and find out what they mean.

My situation as faculty representative goes on without any trouble. I like the work and the responsibility that comes with it. My colleague with me as faculty representative is very cool and in fact he studies the same as me, computer science at the moment. I said at the moment, because he is ont sure he is going to continue his grade on computer science yet. Also my volounteer work with www.dragvolportalen.no is going great. Today I visited Dragvoll, one of the two major campuses in Trondheim to ask people and to take their picture for a small story. I asked them what their internet-habits were as to visiting our site, dragvollportalen.no and using the interactive tools integrated on the web for students at NTNU. I got the idea for asking them since I heard that some students never use NTNU its own interactive learning tools in their education. But all I spoke with up at dragvoll use them. All though some have not yet visited dragvollportalen.no. Too bad.

And then there is plenty of seminars to follow for anyone who is intersted. And if there is free lunch, why not? Free food and an opportunity to learn something! Last week, on friday, I attended a seminar on the topic wether or not Japan`s economy has rebounded or not since the last down-period. Many great lecturers from Norwegian Foreign Affairs to Universities in Japan and North-America. It lasted all day and we were quite tired at the end of the day.

Today Sun Microsystems and JAVA are arranging a seminar at Gloshaugen. I am going, there is pizza served at 16.30. And then at five o`clock the japanese language course begins.

Amzaingly great performance from The Rolling Stones last night in Bergen. Absolutely amazing. Mick Jagger greeted the audience in norwegian while they entered the stage before the first song, "Jumpin` Jack Flash". From there on it went only one way. It looked like The Rolling Stones had a blast on stage. Check out this video from one of the local newspapers in Bergen.

They arrived last night at Bergen airport twenty minutes after we had touched the ground at Bergen airport. And as I sit here and write this entry it is six hours until they open the gates at the arena. I don`t know what to say. I do not have words to describe it anymore. I have to let it sink in a few days so that you next week may get a statement out of me then. I am too excited. Right now I am ready for all the "Satisfaction" I can get tonight!

Global Startup Workshop 2007

Start NTNU will next year in March host the next Global Startup Workshop 2007. It is premier conference for organizers of entreneurship competitions to meet, share best practises and train the next generation of organizers.

The first conference was held at MIT in Boston. Last year it was held in Buenos Aires, Argentine. It is formed to assist schools in the development of their entrepreneurial communities. If you still have not chosen NTNU as your place to study next year, this will have to be a good reason for choosing NTNU and Trondheim as your place to study.

"Discovery" has just completed a successful launch from Florida about an hour ago. I watched the whole launch live from NASA`s own offical site.

They will send live footage from the whole mission where they plan at least two space-walks connecting the space-shuttle to the International Space Center. In about 15 minutes they will open the payload bay doors on the shuttle! Awesome!

Amazing and live footage awaits you, be there or be square.

Unfortunate Son

One month left until I take on my duties as a faculty representative for my faculty which covers Computers, Information Science, Math and Electronics at NTNU. I look forward to begin the work with my colleague-representative whom also studies Computer Science. Now my days consists of getting up at 06:00 a.m. to drive my girlfriend to her work around seven. She works as a medical secretary at a public health center in Trondheim. I work evenings till 23.00 p.m. as usual at NetCom where I am taking calls from customers to help them with any questions they might have concerning our mobile technology, phones, our services or their subscriptions.

Being offline here I live is not cool. The router I have been connecting to all this time has been getting worse and worse until now recently I have not been able to make any connection to it. Since it not mine, It is not up to me to fix this either so I hope the router will be replaced in the near future or I may be allowed to stretch a cable down to my computer form the router. Low with money also so life is good right now. Er, not. I am sick and tired of using wireless network here I live and it has never been any good, unstable as it has been all this time. In and out, signal/no signal. Very funny. And now I have realized that, since I have quit anything with nicotine in it, I am addicted not only to coffeine but to the internet as well. I am not functioning normal without my connection to the world outside! Anyone else?

My dad, he invested in a Nikon digital camera recently, and at the moment I don`t remember which it was! He is a very dedicated with photographing and has travelled a lot taking pictures with a colleague from work. Anyway, he went this sunday towards Finland to photograph bears and wolfes in Finland with his colleague. Should result in some stunning images if they are lucky. I must then convince him to upload some pictures so he can show off a bit too.

Preserved for the future

There is something special and mystical about photographies in black and white. For the time being I am consuming myself with my girlfriend, my photographing and editing of pictures on my computer. And off course some work, mostly at evenings until they close up around 11:00 pm.

Recently I was at a party at Munkholmen in the Trondheimfjord. Theme there was the 1980`s. Be sure to visit and check out some of the crazy outfits here.

Summer is here, school`s out and we have now time to spend more time on our various hobbies. I have spent some time cultivating one of my two dearest hobbies, photography and aviation! Having just come back from a flight from Bergen to Trondheim where the sky was clear and sunny giving me and my brother an amazing view when we took off from Bergen. The picture below is taken as we taxi to runway 35 at Flesland aiport, Bergen for takeoff. The departure was routed right over Bergen city to give the passengers a scenic departure from Bergen. I have not yet edited pictures from our trip with a bus from Trondheim to Bergen. That was a scenic route along one of the most popular fjords in Norway, Sognefjorden and Nordfjord. The tour was a 14 hour trip on bus, not recommended but I would not have been without all the scenic impressions we got from that trip. Today it is around 80 degrees fahrenheit in Trondheim with almost no cluds and I am listening to Notorious B.I.G. - C.R.E.A.M. That`s nice. Too bad I start at work at three o`clock.

Shooting opportunity after rain

This friday I am invited to a barbeque-party near Gloshaugen by some fellow students. At this barbeque all the student-representatives at Gloshaugen from each faculty will meet and get to know each other. I was elected as a representative for my faculty along with another student, he was picked out as the main representative, which I hope I will be seeing at friday. We will start the work as student representatives the 1rst of august this year. At the barbeque we will meet the other new representatives and the old ones that are retiring from their positions. I believe that one can represent only one year at a time or something.

Next week I will travel to Bergen to get some sun in the face and visit my father who lives there. He just recently invested in a brand new camera which I can`t wait to get my hands on. A Nikon with 13 megapixels...

Me and my brother plus my father and a friend of his was originally planning on watching Rolling Stones in Bergen, but as you may very well know by now they post-poned their tour because of Keith Rochard`s head-injury he got while climbing some trees on Fiji.

Every tuesday Edgar Café at Samfundet gets crowded around six p.m. I arrived around 6.30 but already you couldn`t find one free seat!

Students arrange a Quiz at Edgar Café at 07.00 tuesdays, where people can win free dinners. You and some friends form a team with maximum four people. Then you pick a name for the team where you have a chance to get creative. Of the six categories, which consists og ten questions, you can choose a category that you think you know best and go all or nothing on that category and maybe get double the usual score on each question. But, if you get a wrong answer in your "all or nothing"-category you loose a point. Even if you don`t answer it.

The categories were Tv-shows, Sports, Miscellaneous, The bible, Morgan Freeman and last but not least, USA. Difficult categories perhaps but during Quiz-shows like this you sometimes surprise yourself of what you know of topics regarding common knowledge. The A-team, which was my team with Peter from Germany scored a total of 52 points.
I belive we ended up far, far down at the rankings. The competitions was tough. Tougher than both me and Peter had foreseen. We scored 52 points whilst the top three teams scored a total of over 300 points together! But we figured that since me and him scored 52 points and the winning team had four people and scored 113 points, we would have maybe won if we just had two people more on our group!

The team that won with a personal best or the team`s best score in the competition so far with 113 points, "Quiz My Black Ass" (see picture below) received seven free meals each! Congratulations from me and Dragvollportalen to you guys.

I just came back after a short trip to Oslo, the capital here in Norway, photographing a band called True Confession. They were invited to join the Emergenza-festival, the biggest music festival in the world for unsigned bands. Congratulations to True Confession, which through votes by the audience at the concert came through and advanced to the semi-finals which will be held at John Dee in Oslo some time in may. Planning studies in Trondheim next semester?

Studieby1 is an umbrella-organization for the university, NTNU, HiST and other educational institutions in Trondheim. They plan to organize an online chat where coming students can send in their questions on any thing they might think of on how, what and where about studyingin Trondheim. I heard because the dragvollportalen.no, where I do some volounteer work with two other students is asked to take upon the job of organizing the whole schedule of getting students to sit and asnwer any qeustions that might be sent in. It has been freezing in Trondheim the last few days. It has crawled down to minus fifteen degrees celsius. Brr.

I am sorry that this blog so far has circled around everything else but school but there is just too much to do when it comes to studying and so much other things to do when I am online at last. I had a mid-term test in Discrete Mathematics today. Part one consisted of multiple-choice tasks while part two had two big pieces of i-don`t-know-what-the-f*ck-it-was. I think it went well though.

Busted wing

Airbus was conducting tests on the wings of the mighty A380 when the wing cracked and was destroyed. The testing is accomplished with the wing being bent upwards, way beyond its limitations until it snaps.

The cracking occured when the wing was bent 7.4 metres out of the original travel of the wing during normal turbulence. This is said to be completely normal for the wing to burst like this under such testing. The likeliness that this aircraft will ever have to face that type of weather that makes the wing travel out of its standard in that way is like zero.

All aircraft companies have to carry out such tests to find the limits of the material they build the aircraft of. And also to find out if the computers were right in their calculations on the aicraft.

The Airbus A380

is currently touring the world where Airbus engineers and pilots are testing the aircrafts behavior in different environments. About a month ago Airbus did a series of high altitude testing flying the A380 from Tolouse, the base of Airbus in France to Medellin, Colombia which is located in a small valley at about 7000 ft. (2 133 m). Right now the Airbus is visiting the cold and harsh climate of Canada and then it heads further east to visit Asian Aerospace `06 in Singapore.

On this day, 60 years ago in 1946 the very first electronic computer saw the light of day for the first time at the University of Pennsylvania in the United States, ENIAC. It took two people three years to build and weighed 30.000 kg. Six women was hired as programmers and it used electricity like a small village.

But the term personal computer as we are familiar with today did not appear public before 1962 in an article in the New York Times

-New York Times article reporting John W. Mauchly's vision of future computing spoken to a meeting of the American Institute of Industrial Engineers that previous day. Mauchly told the gathering, "There is no reason to suppose the average boy or girl cannot be master of a personal computer."

In Norway the first computer of this kind arrived in 1951 and was called NUSSE. It was a bit smaller than the ENIAC computer. By 1964, twelve computers were in use in Norway and 16 more had been ordered.

Writings in the sand

I did not get any of the jobs I applied for at the Studentradioen or as a photographer for Under Dusken. They phoned me last week from Studentradioen and informed me that I had not reached up in the competition. I haven`t heard anything from Under Dusken yet, but I consider it as lost to another and better opponent as they told me at the interview that I had to have the last weekend vacant. Since they have not tried to reach me I think the job is already occupied by now. Anyhow, I will apply next semester, this fall that is. Now I feel more confident and secure of what they are looking for and I feel they are looking for students with a bit more knowledge on the student community and a broader network within the University as a whole.

My studies are going steady forward with my weekly submissions in Discrete Mathematics and readings on East-Asia, System Engineering and this course that is based on ICT, Information and Communication Technologies herein how technology shapes our society and most importantly, how we contribute and shape technology ourselves. Tomorrow I am going to meet my group in the course on ICT for the first time. We will consist of three people in all and we are going to work on the submission for this week in the ICT-course with a deadline on friday. Anyway, it is just another manic monday

Well, back home again after these interviews with Under Dusken and Studentradioen. I feel so reliefed having gone through the interviews and I have a good feeling. I think I did o.k. on the interviews. I will know later this week, maybe on wednesday or tuesday if I got the job or not. My primary choice was the job at Studentradioen. But I will be delighted if I get the job as a photographer for Under Dusken. That too would be neat. I signed a registration form that told the people at Studentersamfundet which job that had the highest priority with me.

Some new music has gotten my attention lately. I was at this cafè today with my girlfriend, Anette, and I heard this easy-listening mix of a Simon & Garfunkel-song, Sound of Silence. Just had to ask the people working at the cafeteria who the artist was. Jack Johnson he told me, the guy behind the counter. Came home and got the song right away. Very cool song.

Round 2: Fight!

Round one completed. Just come back from an interview with the Studentradio-people. I was called yesterday, Sunday and asked if I could meet with them on an interview at Studentersamfundet, the student community building in Trondheim, famous for its concerts and good student society. Six people, all executives at the student radiostation, sat in front of me as I sat down in a big, soft, red sofa to have a little "chat" with them. I sipped on a cup of coffee while the six of them, seated in two black sofas in front of me, introduced themselfes. I was of course a bit nervous, they asked me about music, what kind of music I liked and wether or not I am politically interested. Which three cd`s I bought last time, if I were to make a program now, about something from the news, what would I pick up from foreign and domestic news... and so on. And when we arrived at the end, I was asked to make a speech about me, somekind of speech where I adressed them and convincing them I was the right person for them. I was very relieved when the interview was over, although they seemed like really nice people. The stress was over for now. I went straight up to Gloshaugen and bought me a sandwich and a cup of coffee.

Now round two is coming up, the interview with Under Dusken, about the vacant position as a photographer for Under Dusken. They phoned me as well yesterday and we arranged a meeting at Studentersamfundet later today. It starts in about a half hour, better round up this posting then. Wish me luck.

My applications

My applications both for the job at the student radiostation and for the job as a photographer for the student-magazine called "Under Dusken" are finished. For my application as photographer I had to enclose a couple of images that I have taken. The link to my application at Flickr.

For the application to the student radio I had to write a page about my self, sounds easy but that one was the hardest. Try summing up yourself on one piece of paper! I really hope to get in on any of these jobs. As I told you at the last posting, I hope to have heard some news regarding my application next week sometime.

And then I just have to tell you about this pilot that landed his helicopter at a parking lot in a little norwegian town because he had forgotten his cellular phone at the nearby hotel!

Work besides school

I have posted an application to Under Dusken, which is a local magazine for students and academics in Trondheim and surrounding academic environments. I want a job there as a photographer. I saw a link to their homepage where they asked for more people. The job does not give me any money but I would be happy to get some experience working as a photographer. I have always found it very interesting to take pictures and I hope that some of my images I enclose in my application are good enough to give me a tryout at Under Dusken taking their pictures.

I had to enclose some images in my application that I have taken earlier to have something there to show for. Here is one picture taken of the fjord next to the city centre of Trondheim. This fjord is actually called The Trondheim-fjord.

It is not perhaps one of the best images but the light the sun creates here is so intense and amazing. I simply had to enclose that one.

I must limit myself for the work outside school and focus more on my studies and not let anything non-relevant get in way. That means saying no to my boss about working saturdays, so that I can have some time off in the weekends. He did not appreciate that so much. Well, I told him I could only work, say, Mondays and Thursdays or Mondays and Fridays. Well, this week he has not given me any day. I thought so.

Enough said about the work, let me instead tell you that I also applied for another job. A job at the local radiostation for students in Norway. That is the most exciting application of the two I am working on now I think. Radio has always been kind of my secret passion and a little dream for me to work with. I am hoping most of all that I willl get an opening there, instead of the job as photographer. The definite last day to send in the application is Sunday, january the 29th. Hope to have got answers from them both within the next week then.

Well, had to start doing something about my Gloshaugen-blog. Used to be at MSN Space before, but that one is so unreliable that I can`t possible go on using their system any longer. It`s always the same, "This space is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later", when I go to check it.
Now I started here instead and I guess that this blogspace is as good as any other, at least a heck of a lot better than MSN`s Space. Gloshaugen is located at NTNU , Norwegian University of Science and Technology, in Trondheim, Norway, and it is the largest university in Norway.

Here I study computer science, and the course is like I can choose very much for my self what courses I want to study, outside the must-have-courses which one have to have, if you want a degree in Computer Science. But it is very free and a lot of responsibility. Anyways, I plan to blog my progress on my studies here, and hope that someone that plans to start their studies at Gloshaugen, NTNU or in Trondheim, in near future, finds these pages interesting and leaves a comment once in a while.
